If your compassion
flows only outward,
like a river that forgets its source,
it will run dry.
You may cradle the world
in gentle hands,
heal wounds,
soothe hearts—
yet still leave your own
untouched.
But true compassion
is a circle,
unbroken and whole.
It begins within,
softening your own scars,
forgiving your own stumbles,
resting in your own breath.
Only then
can it flow without end,
a spring that nourishes
both self and other.
For if your compassion
does not include yourself,
it is incomplete—
like a song half-sung,
like a light
that shines for all
but you.
