If You See Me Smiling
If you see me smiling,
A soft and distant grin,
It’s likely not your story
That’s playing deep within.
My gaze may seem attentive,
My nods both slow and kind,
But truth is, I’ve departed—
I’ve wandered from my mind.
Perhaps you spoke of weather,
Or tales from days long past,
But I am chasing daydreams
That flutter free and fast.
So if my lips are curling
And laughter’s on my face,
It’s probably the silence
That’s filled this sacred space.
It’s not that I don’t love you,
Or care for what you say,
But sometimes thoughts go drifting
And carry me away.
So if you see me smiling,
And wonder where I’ve been—
Just know I heard you, truly,
But not with ears—within.
