Deeper Into the World
The spiritual life—no distant star,
No mountain peak where we retreat,
But a river flowing where we are,
Washing the dust from our wandering feet.
It does not lift us from the earth,
Nor close our eyes to morning’s light;
It deepens every moment’s worth,
And sharpens day with sacred sight.
It’s not escape, but fuller breath,
Not silence, but a listening ear—
To laughter, sorrow, birth, and death,
To every voice that calls us near.
It roots us in the loam and clay,
In tangled woods and city streets;
It teaches us to kneel and pray
Where life and love and longing meet.
So let us walk with open hands,
With hearts awake and spirits stirred;
The holy dwells in all that stands—
We find the world, and find the Word.
