Peace Begins Within
We search for peace in distant lands,
In silent woods and open skies,
We dream of calm with outstretched hands,
And chase the light that always flies.
We build our walls, we draw our lines,
We hope that quiet might descend,
We bargain with the world for signs
That broken hearts and wounds will mend.
But peace is not a gift to find
Upon the restless, turning earth;
It waits within the seeking mind,
It grows within, and there finds birth.
For storms will rage and voices shout,
And troubles rise like ocean tides;
No peace can blossom from without
While war within the soul abides.
So turn your gaze from outward strife,
And gently tend the fields inside;
Forgive the past, embrace your life,
Let kindness be your only guide.
For when the heart is calm and clear,
The world reflects that gentle art;
And peace, once distant, draws so near—
It flowers first within the heart.
No outer world can heal the pain
That we ourselves refuse to see;
But when we make our peace again,
The world is healed, and so are we.
